Jaguar E-Type Development – The E-Type Series 3 V12 |

The alloy block was also more efficient at dispersing heat. A single overhead cam for each cylinder block as opposed to two was a necessary substitution in order to accommodate the engine and allow for an acceptable steering lock. So ultimately a regular power output from the V12 was around 300bhp - not much more than the XK unit was producing before the emission control regulations. So the V12's capacity was also increased by a rebore to 5343cc, which upped the power output to 325bhp, although this was actually 272bhp in production owing to new requirements adopted at that time. Careful attention was paid to gas flow, and four Zenith carburettors were used with Lucas ignition, enabling Jaguar's V12 engine to meet the American emission regulations whilst returning to the E-type's original legendary performance. The longer wheelbase of the 2 plus 2 was adopted for all models, convertible or not. So the new roadster was much longer than the original, with a new hard top option as well. The new roadster still had a larger 2 seater cockpit but with a large parcel shelf where the rear seats would be situated in the fixed-head. Further modifications for a larger air intake to cope with the heat from the 5.3 litre engine, improved brakes and wider wheels for high performance requiring flared wheel arches all subtly added to the evolution of the E-type. The accumulation of many small weight increases necessitated the introduction of power assisted steering as standard. With improved torque and smooth V12 engine, roomier cockpit and power steering, these new E-types called the Series Three were a more sophisticated drive than the original. The series Three performed well and was a sales success story, because jaguar maintained its reasonable price with their usual excellent standards.
