We had a fantastic time.
Sunday afternoon walk to Rosedale Abbey and back. Excellent dinner at the Fox and Hounds, Sinnington.
Monday morning walk to Rosedale via Northdale- through the woods above the cottage and down the lovely little river valley. Later, drove over the moors to Whitby - famous fish and chips at the Magpie cafe, returning back across the moors at dusk.
Tuesday wet - York railway museum and the old city. Enormous dinner at the Blacksmiths Arms, Lastington. Dodged the sheep and drove back via the scenic route over Chimney Bank.
Wednesday - my Christmas present - a day's hire of an MGA from Reflections Classic Car Hire. The weather was brilliant - blue sky and sunshine all day - and the car was fantastic - fully restored over an 18 month period by the proprieter, Charles. We drove up and down 3 in 1 hills, along narrow byways in 'hidden' valleys and across the tops of the moors. Lunch at Rievaulx. The whole day was very memorable.
Thursday - the famous '12 mile walk' around the rim of the valley, along the disused railway. This was fantastic with magnificent views across the valley and relics of the Victorian iron workings. Dinner at the White Swan in Pickering - slept soundly that night!
Friday - Scarborough, via the car museum at Thornton le Dale. Some interesting cars, motor cycles and commercial vehicles, plus the biggest collection of miscellaneous parts, equipment and motoring memorabilia that I have ever seen. Also visited Murray Scott Nelson in Scarborough - the renowned restorer of Austin Healey 3000 sports cars. Fish and Chips (again!) at Mother Hubbards - highly recommended. Visited Robin Hoods Bay on the way back. That evening, we walked up the road beyond the cottage, just taking in the ambiance one last time.
It was beautiful just to sit outside the cottage and listen to the birdsong - so tranquil.
I had not been to this area before but enjoyed every minute - returning home feeling fighting fit after all the fresh air and exercise
We thoroughly enjoyed out stay at Ann's Cottage - it is a very special place and Ann and Colin made us so welcome. |
